A prescription charge is the amount you contribute towards the cost of a subsidised medicine. In New Zealand, the standard charge is usually $5 per subsidised prescription item, although charges can vary depending on the medicine, age, prescriber, or additional pharmacy services. Once you and your family have paid for 20 eligible prescription items from 1 February, you may qualify for a prescription subsidy and no longer need to pay prescription charges for the remainder of the subsidy year.
Pharmacist-only medicines are medicines that can be purchased without a prescription but must be supplied directly by a pharmacist. The pharmacist will assess whether the medicine is appropriate for you, provide advice on its safe and correct use, and may record relevant customer details as required. Examples include certain pain relief, thrush treatments, eye drops, and medicines for some skin conditions.

You become eligible for the subsidy once you have paid for 20 new prescription medicine items from 1 February each year. Once you're eligible, you do not have to pay any more prescription charges for the rest of that year (to 31 January).
You can reach the 20-item threshold by combining prescription items for your partner and dependent children aged from 14 up to 18.

Buccaline is used to boost the body's immune system against bacterial infection during the cold & flu season. While it will not prevent cold or flu, it reduces the risk of complications that often arise when bacterial infections worsen viral infections. Do not buy Buccaline if you are unwell. Buccaline is not a replacement for a flu vaccine.
